Measuring SEO effectiveness is quite complicated because it deals with a lot of tools and measurements strategies. This is indeed a critical topic because many people are aiming to reach on top places in search engine by using effective SEO techniques; well of course, they significantly pay interest on how they will know that their SEO techniques are truly effective.

There are four ways to measure SEO effectiveness.

1. Indexation Metrics

Indexation is an important step to achieve presence in natural search results. If your site has been indexed, it would not rank in the search engines. More indexation on your site is not good because it will not rank when it has duplicate competitors, not knowing that you are just competing on your own site. This is concern is known as self-competition or split-link popularity.

Indexation Metrics will determine if all of your web pages have been correctly indentified by search engine. This is done by measuring your site’s indexation through site queries in the major search engines. The queries will measure how many URL are indexed in search engines. After knowing the number of queries, compare it with the number of pages that should appear.

2. Backlinks Metrics

These backlink metrics would show how many external links that point your site. The more external links that are pointing to your site, greater chances that your site will rank on search engines. So it is much better to have many external links that are pointing to your site. Backlinks can be by a lot of ways, such as blog posting, article writing, and many more SEO strategies. You just have to place the URL of your site on each posting that you have.

3. Ranking Metrics

Rankings metrics will present where your site appears when your keywords or key phrases are searched. When you subscribe to Enquisite, it can track the page on which there are rankings when your keywords are searched.

4. Traffic and Revenue Metrics

You will be able to know what are the keywords used to find your site on search engine, the revenue generated per keyword, the percentage of visitor that availed your products, and many more.

All these metrics will help you determine if your SEO techniques are effective. However, these metrics does not show exact numbers or values that are said to be correct. These are offered in order for you to monitor your ranking status and to know the changes happening on your site while you are using your SEO techniques.

I get asked this question all the time, so I thought I’d write a quick little article about it. The question is: How do you start an SEO campaign?

Generally there are two scenarios. 1. You’ve got a brand new site or 2. You’ve got an older site that isn’t ranked well.

For this article I’m going to discuss scenario 2. After all, if you have a brand new site then you can work on optimizing the site right off the bat. So let’s get right to it!

Step One:

The very first thing I do is fire up my handy Xenu Link Sleuth tool which is free, and analyze the site. Xenu shows you all the links on your site, what the page title’s are (so you can quickly analyze them) and a ton of other things that can quickly show you what you need to tweak. Read my Xenu article for more specifics.

After I’ve analyzed the site, I go through and fix any glaring on-page optimization problems. Do half the pages all have the same generic Title? That’s an easy fix. Are there 50 broken links? Remove them. That sort of thing. After I’ve done that I move on to….

Step Two:

Keyword Research! My keyword research is a very simple two step process. First I head over to the free Google Keyword Research Tool and drum up a massive list of possible potential keywords. Next, I export them into a spreadsheet file and then import that file into the Micro Niche Keyword Tool That software then tells me which of those keywords will be easy to get ranked under quickly.

Armed with those remaining keywords on my pared down Micro Niche Keyword list, I head on to…

Step Three:

Web site Optimization. In this step I take the keywords that the Micro Niche Keyword Tool gave me and I create one new web page for each keyword. I integrate those new pages into the main website by linking to the new pages from the old pages. On each of those new pages, I use the keyword as the Title, use the keyword in the description meta tag as well as in image alt tags where appropriate. And finally I round out each new page with an article written around that keyword.

Now with my fleet of new pages all integrated into the old site, I move on to…

Step Four:

Linking. Step four is the last step and usually the one I spend the least amount of time on. I know that’s contrary to a lot of SEO people out there, but I get bored with getting links. I much prefer to link bait and get others to link to me because they want to. Getting lots of high quality inbound links is important because it effects your Pagerank which is a big part of how Google ranks your site.

But if you’ve picked the right keywords, that is, if you’ve used the keywords that the Micro Niche Keyword tool gave you, the whole point of that software is that it shows you keywords that you don’t have to get a ton of inbound links to rank well under. And that’s why I use it. So that’s all I’ll say on linking.

And that’s it! That’s how I start all my SEO campaigns. Granted there IS some art involved in those four steps above….but it’s really not all that more complicated!

When it comes to Search Engine Optimization, many marketers make it a lot more complicated than it has to be. Instead of simplifying for everybody, most internet marketers have a long, conspiracy filled theory as to how attain high search engine results.

Let’s once and for all, simplify the process.

There are two MAIN factors of SEO.
content backlinks

This is the foundation of SEO. There are more subtleties to high search engine rankings, but without these two things, you will never get anywhere in the rankings.

Let’s start off with content. I know this may sound rather obvious, but it’s important. You want original content on all of your pages and you want to make sure that it’s at least a minimum of 400 words per page. So, in summary, a decent amount of good, original content.

Now, let’s move on to backlinks. Backlinks are basically going to be the anchor text that you use for the keyword that you want to rank highly in the search engines for.

So, for example, let’s say you had a site about garden hoses and you wanted to rank for the keyword “garden hoses”. You’d want to make sure that you are linking to your site with the keyword “garden hoses”.

Now, all links are not built alike. Some have a lot more power than others. For example, a social bookmarking link is not going to have the same power as a link from a High Pagerank blog. 1 powerful link will have 10 times more power than an average link that anybody else can get.

So you have a great design, great content and even a few links to your Joomla site but it still seems that you aren’t going nowhere in the search engines. Well, there is a reason: although Joomla is a great CMS it isn’t that good with SEO. Let’s see what we can do so Joomla will become the Search Engines’ best friend:

1. Enable SEF urls: this is almost critical for good rankings. Even though search engines are very good at indexing dynamic urls many webmasters have seen better results when using search engine friendly urls.

Here is how to enable it: log in the administrator backend and look for the “Global Configuration” icon. Now click it and in the upper right part you must enable “Search Engine Friendly URLs”. Also, if your site runs on an Apache server than you must rename the “htaccess.txt” file to “.htaccess”.

Although Joomla’s built-in SEF component is rather limited the output is still seen very well by the Search Engines. But it gets even better with the next module.

2. OpenSEF ( tinyurl.com/2oeogw ): this the best SEF component for Joomla. It works great, doesn’t slow down your site and is very configurable. Some of OpenSEF’s features:

- automatic rewrite of all urls

- ability to define how SEF urls will look based on section, category and article title

- define 404 Error url

- unlimited number of alias URL mappings

- possibility to create and update XML sitemaps, usable by Google, Yahoo and MSN

- many more…

And it does all this without modifying Joomla’s core files!

3. Put up a sitemap ( tinyurl.com/3y9bz6 ): in case you don’t want or can’t use the OpenSEF component you should create a XML sitemap to help the search engines index your site easier. It is integrated with other built-in components so contacts, newsfeeds and weblinks are supported.

4. Use metatags: this is very important if you want good rankings and many clicks from the search engines. The keywords metatag isn’t used by the search engines anymore, but using the description is a very good idea.

The best use for the description metatag actually is to influence visitors to click more – leaving the text excerpt that is shown up to the search engines is not the best idea in the world.

5. Ping module ( tinyurl.com/y8m5aa ): pinging is usually done only by blogs, but it can be used to great success with normal sites too! Install this component and after each time you write a new piece of content click “Syndicate” in the “Components” menu to ping Technorati.

6. Technorati tags ( tinyurl.com/2nkcqt ): this plugin adds tags at the end of your content, tags that are linked to Technorati. This way, when you ping Technorati with the ping module I’ve told you about before it will help you categorize the search engines.

7. Trackback module ( tinyurl.com/2wvj7l ): this is another thing we can pick up from blogs to help us get higher in the search engines. If you write about blogs this can help you get a few links. Think of it as a new form of link exchange – you place a link from a page on your site to another page on another site and you get a link back.
